Fire in Wake of Hurricane Sandy Hits Queens Area Featured in Song, Film, TV


A Ramones song references the area of New York City, which also served as a location for Woody Allen’s "Radio Days" and TV show "Rescue Me."



In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, a major fire late Monday hit parts of Rockaway, Queens, a part of New York City that has been mentioned and featured in popular music, films and TV shows.

NBC News reported early Tuesday that more than 200 firefighters have been battling the fire throughout the night with at least 50 homes destroyed.
Officials did not confirm further details or detail what caused the fire.

The area is referenced in the Ramones song "Rockaway Beach." It also served as a location for Woody Allen’s Radio Days and Denis Leary series Rescue Me, according to Wikipedia. The Rockaway Peninsula is also a popular summer resort for New Yorkers.
Stock exchanges in New York will remain closed for a second day in a row on Tuesday and film and TV productions were scheduled to remain on hold.
As of early Tuesday, there were no hurricane damage estimates available, but millions of people were reported to be without power in the New York area.
The city's transit system was also facing major problems amid reports of water having flooded tunnels in Manhattan. the head of the Metropolitan Transit Authority saying that the subway faced a potential disaster, with damage yet to be assessed.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for New York and Long Island in the wake of the hurricane's destruction. It will make available federal aid to assist with recovery efforts.
